Brief summary of business:
Rising Tide Capital is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey with hubs in Newark and New Brunswick, that seeks to transform lives and communities through entrepreneurship. The organization’s model is unique in its focus on consistent mentoring and coaching over time to support greater sustainability. Rising Tide Capital’s signature programs include the Community Business Academy, Credit to Capital, and Business Acceleration Services, equipping entrepreneurs to pursue greater economic security and deliver value to their communities.

How many years have you been in business? We have been equipping entrepreneurs with business fundamentals for over 17 years.

When did you enter the non-profit industry?  This is a long story, but I'll attempt to keep it brief and also so happens to be the founding story of Rising Tide Capital. I co-founded Rising Tide Capital in 2004. My parents like many others in this nation are immigrants and I saw opportunity from my mother's own experience. She had to flee our homeland of Ethiopia during a social collapse that occurred during a communist dictatorship. Leaving me at 2 years old in the care her younger sister, after having lost two older siblings during that turbulent time. My mother's deepest goal was to be re-united with me stateside. She was a waitress as a her first job in the U.S. and that was not enough to bring me over. My creative and innovative mom, leveraged her sewing skillset that she picked up back home. She began designing and making dresses after her long waitressing shifts. She engaged her community, started selling dresses and before long she was able to save enough for her dream to be reunited with me. At the time my mother, didn't think of herself in this way but she had started a business. This small business that most would not have thought would amount to much to ended up enabling my mother to bring me to this country and pay to educate and raise me. This story shaped my experience and led me to think of others that may have a dream for a better life for their family but whose jobs pay such low wages that their dreams seem impossible. In fact there are millions of families that live through working poverty, and even though they turn to an entrepreneurial path their success is often limited by their business skills and access to resources. If we can help these businesses succeed, not only can we transform their lives but we fight working poverty by creating jobs and economic opportunity in the neighborhoods that need it most. Since the inception of Rising Tide Capital we have over 3,300 graduates of the Community Business Academy and the work continues!

What motivates you? Our mission is to transform lives and communities through entrepreneurship. We are deeply motivated by the opportunity to engage with our community and play a critical role in unlocking their existing potential.
In our work, we primarily work with people of color, a majority of them women, that have entrepreneurial dreams and are currently working multiple low-wage jobs to make ends meet but don't know where to begin. They are also often grappling with a systemic lack of access to resources and opportunities. Through our programs and services we see the ourselves as guides to help people actualize their own purpose and vision.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know?  Rising Tide Capital has been on MLK Drive, in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City since it was founded.

When did you join the AACCNJ? We have been a friend of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey for a long time and reactivated our membership in 2020, at the height of the pandemic to affirm our belief for a stronger and more resilient network of support through the chamber.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  The chamber is a great resource as a talent network as well as an advocate for resources that our entrepreneurs need, including support for our programs in service to the most nascent and fastest growing sector of the entrepreneurial segment in the US.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  I, along with my team at Rising Tide Capital, are grateful to the Chamber for helping to get the word out about our programs and business acceleration services. The opportunity to be a champion for entrepreneurship, small businesses, and an inclusive local economy is greatly strengthened when we use our respective strengths to get the work done.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members? These are challenging times for business owners. If you are feeling discouraged and fatigued, please join Rising Tide’s Resilience meditation practices every weekday morning at 7:30AM. Make sure to also keep networking and reach out to Rising Tide and other non-profits to get the training and coaching you need to grow even amidst times of deep disruption. Sometimes, our greatest opportunities maybe hidden in plain sight and dialogue, connection and taking care of our mental resilience is the key for long-term success and sustainability. We need to do what we can to maintain an active community so we can all thrive.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey?  There is so much to do and explore in our wonderful state! In the pre-covid era the restaurants and music and arts venues in Jersey City and Newark were our playgrounds. Barbecuing and picnics in Liberty State Park, Fall Apple Cider donuts from Terhune Farms, Summer floats down the Delaware River, Korean Spa to relax after a hard week at work and of course, now more time out in nature hiking and making sure we and our children get as much exposure to the trails and the outdoors is a priority.

Who is your favorite sports team? To be honest, Sports have not been a big family activity. However, I am always in awe of professional athletes. I’m inspired by their passion and dedication to their craft, similarly to small business owners, there is a lot that people sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  As soon as I joined Mary Griffith made sure I have the basics nailed down. Connecting me to get my necessary certifications, this interview...it really is a blessing. I am so happy I joined.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  The connections and the valuable information in regards to certifications and funding.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  Stay connected and take advantage of any opportuntity that comes your way.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my family. For obvious reasons we haven't done too much but we have been to Six Flags drive thru Safari quite a few times LOL

Who is your favorite sports team?  I am not a sports fan, I leave that to my husband LOL

When did you decide entrepreneurship was for you? I always knew I wanted to work for myself in some capacity. I've attempted other businesses in the past and it didn't pan out. At the end of 2016, I decided that I wanted to start a business that highlighted Black
owned businesses in the best light because I was sick of hearing the negative stereotypes. Being a Fashion Merchandiser, I had a natural eye to curate and put things together so curating subscription boxes was a natural fit. Then October 2020 I was laid
off from my job of 14 years and decided to jump into entrepreneurship full time and here we are!

Do you have any other projects/events planned for the near future? I’m currently working on my 5th year anniversary relaunch in Richmond, Va at Maggie Walker’s original St. Luke’s Building now called the St. Luke Legacy Center. I am breathing new
life into The Vitamin M Box, continuing with my mission to connect consumers with Black owned brands on a cyclical basis.

Business Summary: The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The New Jersey Region of the American Red Cross assures that all New Jerseyans affected by disaster receive care, shelter and hope; our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; everyone has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products; all members of our Armed Services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.

How many years have you been in business?  The Red Cross was founded in 1881, I joined in 2012. Prior to that I spent 12 years in financial development for nonprofits.

How did you become involved in the non-profit industry? I was a writer and actor in Hollywood. I began using my play productions to donate a portion of ticket proceeds to important causes.

What motivates you?  I am motivated by the success of my team, and the ability for all of us to reach our highest potential while serving the needs of our community.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know?  Most people think of blood donation when the Red Cross is mentioned. It’s an important part of our mission, but so is serving people after disasters big and small. Here in New Jersey, we respond to about 900 housefires a year, offering comfort, a place to stay, financial assistance, and a recovery plan to families who have lost their place of residence due to fires or floods.

When did you join the AACCNJ? We joined in 2021.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  The staff at AACCNJ has been great in helping us promote the need for blood donation from African American and Blacks in New Jersey. Sickle Cell Anemia is a chronic disease that affects many people of this race, and donations from Black and African American donors offer a better match and a more effective transfusion for these patients.

Phone Number: (732) 412-7249
Website: www.seamlesstitle.com

Facebook: Seamless Title
Linkedin: Juanita Painson

Areas you service: Land Title Insurance for residential and commercial properties throughout the State of New Jersey

Business Summary: Seamless Title Agency, Inc. is an independently owned full-service title insurance agency serving the State of New Jersey. We are an integral part of your real estate team. Seamless Title Agency, Inc. helps with real estate transactions by providing land title searches which includes residential and commercial title insurance, closings, and escrow services.

You may ask, why chose Seamless Title, when you call you get a live person and we are involved with your team from beginning to end we communicate with your realtor, lender, attorney, homeowners insurance agent and meet you at the closing table to facilitate a seamless closing.

We have a quick turnaround time in most counties. Our purpose is to bring you peace of mind, one closing at a time.

How many years have you been in business?  35+ years in the title insurance industry

How did you become involved in the title insurance industry? I was about to graduate from college and saw the need to have my own car. I decided to go to an employment agency in Summit, NJ and was asked if I could type. My answer was yes, about 150 words per minute. The next day I started working at the state office of one the major title companies in the State of New Jersey. This was the beginning of condominiums in New Jersey along with Burger King and other fast food establishments and the erection of casinos in Atlantic City. My first job involved typing the legal descriptions; easements, restrictions and conditions for condominiums and other properties in the State of New Jersey. I worked on most of the fast food chains and all of the casinos except the Borgata and Revel which I think is now called Ocean.

What motivates you?  I am motivated by success and happiness. I am motivated whenever I hand the keys over to a new buyer, when I tell a home owner that the refinance closing is complete, when I see a small business achieve their goal by closing on a SBA loan to grow their business. My customer’s joy becomes my joy and I am truly motivated to do it all over again. My goal is to bring them peace of mind, one closing at a time.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know? Every single property is unique, even if they are contiguous. Each piece of land has its own story. One may be inherited, one may have been bought, one may have been divided from a mother lot and shared between siblings and the story is told through the title search.

When did you join the AACCNJ? I joined the African American Chamber of Commerce in 2021 when I opened Seamless Title Agency, Inc.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? As someone doing business in New Jersey, the chamber helps me in several ways; first to learn more about what is being offered on a state level for business, second – to connect with other business owners; third – to market my services to not only consumers but real professionals who are looking for top notch knowledge and experience in the industry.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership? There are several, but I think the most valuable aspect of my AACCNJ membership is exposure to others

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  Get involved and take the time to learn how to grow your business and network with others.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? I am always busy, I like to volunteer and spend some time with the young people of Visions & Pathways teaching them entrepreneurship. In the summer months I spend my time gardening. I love home grown vegetables and flowers and do not use pesticides on my plants. In the past when I was not working I spent my time learning to golf. This is something I would like to get back to in 2022. I would like to perfect my short game and participate in a few golf tournaments in the upcoming year.

Who is your favorite sports team?  I am not a sports fanatic; however, due to quality time with my loving husband, his favorite teams have become my favorite teams. Anything sports gets his attention. He is a diehard Knicks, Nets and Giants fan and anything soccer related.

Website: www.BSideEnt.com
Email: [email protected]
Facebook: @TheBSideEntertainmentGroup
Instagram: @TheBSideEnt
Twitter: @TheBSideEnt

Areas you service: Mainly the Tri-State area but we travel.

Business Summary: The B-Side Entertainment Group is an award-winning, full service event production and entertainment company that has the experience and expertise to execute any special event and top it off with exhilarating musical entertainment! If you can dream it, we can make it a reality.

How many years have you been in business? 12 years (since 2009)

How did you become involved in the entertainment industry? It was a natural fit because Charles (the founder and band leader) has been a musician since the age of 15 and Toray (the managing director) has been working with events as a photographer since 2005. We both have entertainment Public Relations background and we came together to formulate The B-Side Ent. Group because we saw there was a need for what we could provide to the event industry and we wanted to provide "class A" entertainment.

What motivates you?  What motivates us is the reaction from our satisfied clientele who didn't necessarily think they could afford what we do and when they decide to make the investment the return on that investment is more than they ever expected and that is gratifying for us. We are also motivated by the relationships we're able to build with our clients and we highly value being able to provide overall event excellence to a diverse audience.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know? We started out as an entertainment company that only provided live musical entertainment with one band on our roster. We have since expanded and added another amazing band to our roster and broadened the scope of our services to also providing DJs, photography, videography, lighting/audio services, and more.

When did you join the AACCNJ? 2018

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? We have made a lot of connections with members from the chamber and have gained exposure from the AACCNJ events that we have had the pleasure of providing live musical entertainment and photography for.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership? It has been the mentorship and the direct access to John Harmon who exudes humility and has been a wealth of information along with the networking we've been able to do at the various events we've participated in. How did you become involved in the cleaning industry? I learned the art of cleaning at a young age growing up in the West Indies. Areas you service: Nationwide

Business Summary: We use Mobile, Dashboard and Call Center solutions to provide dispatch and automation optimizations to enterprises that require 21st century solutions to analog problems. Currently, we have contracts in the transportation industry linking Independent Mechanics together with truck drivers needing maintenance and repair.

How many years have you been in business? March will make 2 ½ years

How did you become involved in the transportation industry? Years ago, I invested in a trucking business and after working with the people that support the on road truckers, I learned to listen to the needs of some of the people in the industry. Drivers trying to get support on the road as they launch a new business.  Mechanics with great talent, wanting to start their own business, Dispatch desperately looking for resources to support their drivers on the road, drivers getting stuck in hotels, while fleet managers saw their loads at risk costing them thousands of dollars. .

What motivates you? I love solving complex problems, but even more importantly I enjoy helping people. If you look at the current world scene we can see the lack of empathy. I volunteered at 3 of NJ’s  correctional institutions. What I learned was a lesson in real life. it impressed how difficult it is to make a living for some people with real talent.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know?  With our business model, I would love to generate 1,000 - 10,000 jobs.  With our work from home model, we feel it is the safest way to work.

When did you join the AACCNJ? Jan 2021

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? I haven’t been with the chamber long enough, but I can tell you the the responsive nature, the desire to help my business and connect us with the right people had been incredible, right from day 1.

How does your small startup help the transportation industry and those that companies that support the industry? That’s a great question. It is simple, imagine if you are mechanic\shop owner with great skills, but you don’t really know how to get more business. How do you expand your business hours without spending thousands hiring additional staff, buying software, staying up nights managing a team.

If you are Fleet manager, or Director of Operations for a large fleet with hundreds of drivers. We can show you how to lower your cost to Dispatch, enhance driver management & retention, driver safety, validate the services from mechanics,  tap into a nationwide network of global resources that keep your fleet operational.  Most importantly, fleets try to get the best pricing for services, but they are handicaped, they have to sign contracts with pretty much the largest organizations that don’t actually offer the best services.  Now they can get specialized skills supporting, better support and a platform that can help solve some of the most challenging problems in transportation, things that even the most advanced telematics can’t answer.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  I am hoping to leverage the networking capabilities of AACCNJ and hopefully develop relationships with people that have been in business much longer than me so that I can surround myself with mentors.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  Listen carefully

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? I’ve spent a long time in sales and technology. Sales in itself requires travel, so I enjoy being home with my family.  At times playing games and now when the weather hasn’t given us 12 inches, spending time in my backyard on the deck.

Who is your favorite sports team?    I was raised in Brooklyn NY.  I gave up on sports after the Knicks lost on a Patrick Ewing dunk.

  • Access to Capital through Business, Commercial, SBA & Residential Mortgage Lending
  • Expense Reduction, Cost Recovery, Tax Incentives & Coaching

How many years have you been in business? Over 25 years in the banking industry, 38 years as a real estate investor, ultimately leading to the formation of the consulting practice, Main Street Advisory, LLC, about 5 years ago.

How did you become involved in the real estate industry?  I initially got involved in the real estate industry by becoming a licensed real estate sales agent in 1978. By 1982 I made the determination that enjoyed buying and owning more than selling real estate as an agent. That led to my long-standing involvement in the acquisition, rehab, financing, and portfolio management of residential single-family, multi-family, and commercial mixed-use real estate.

What motivates you? I am motivated by the capacity to positively impact the lives of others in ways great and small and giving back as a way of honoring those who have contributed to my life in ways that taught me how to live, prosper, contribute, and triumph over life's situations and circumstances.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know? An interesting fact about my business that most people don't know is our capacity to serve across many industries is more than meets the eye. This is because of the body of work across many different types of businesses through sales, operations, management, strategy, and planning in the private, public, non-profit and corporate sectors. This coupled with the strategic partnerships we have established over the years provides the unique capacity to serve wide and deep for many lines of business.

When did you join the AACCNJ?  I have been associated with the chamber going back to the days of the Metropolitan Trenton African American Chamber of Commerce and my corporate days. MTAACC was the predecessor organization to the AACCNJ we know today. My current business has been a member for the past several years and I have served as Treasurer on the Board for about three years or so now.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  As someone doing business in New Jersey, the chamber helps with access. Because of the chamber's credibility and depth of relationships, we are able to gain access to expand our network, which serves my business and the businesses of others around me.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  The most valuable aspect of my Membership has been, it has allowed me to serve the chamber and the business community with skills I've developed throughout my career both as an entrepreneur and corporate employee, which serves me personally by providing a deep sense of purpose and gratification by aligning my mission with the mission of the chamber.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  The advice I would give to other members is to not only maintain their membership, in the chamber but take full advantage of their membership by learning about all the resources and tools the chamber provides. Furthermore, I would advise fellow members to complete their capability statements, take advantage of the landing page on the chamber website for greater exposure, and participate and get to know other members to enhance their ability to do business with fellow members.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey?  When I am not working, I enjoy spending private time with family and friends in a variety of activities, including golfing, camping, swimming, bowling, shooting pool, and good conversation on a wide variety of topics.

Who is your favorite sports team?  Unlike many of my family members and friends, although I enjoy all sports, I am not overly interested, nor do I follow or know the stats of any players. Growing up in my old neighborhood in South Trenton, I was more impressed with people like Mr. Dillard than any sports figures of the day. Mr. Dillard, who was my best friend's dad growing up, was the only person I knew who read the Wall Street Journal, a number of other papers, and journals every day. He had an eighth-grade education, yet knew more and could converse more intelligently about the world around us than most, and taught himself about the world of investing and built at least a million-dollar portfolio and retired from his job at the state at least 10-years before most of his contemporaries. He was the first one I knew who was truly the "millionaire next door" to coin a phrase from the book so titled. Yet he lived a simple, non-flashy life, in the neighborhood.

Throughout my life, I've been more impressed with the unsung, unknown heroes who contributed their ideas and wisdom into my life. People like this made a difference in my life and along with my parents, many other extended family members, aunts, and uncles along with the grand artificer of the universe are the reason I'm still standing. Without them and a few wrong turns and life for me would have been incredibly and potentially negatively different.

The debt I owe, which I can never repay is to them and it is why I do what I do. It is also why I say to people, I don't work for free, but I stopped working for money many years ago. Some people get it and some don't, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am Phillip Woolfolk and I approved this message.

Business Summary: Daniel Productions produces high-quality creative video programs.  We have won dozens of industry and film festival awards.  Our award-winning productions include training, marketing, documentaries, corporate communications, commercials, and nationally broadcast PSA's.  We are communication experts and visual storytellers.  Our services include creative concept development, script writing, location/studio shooting, graphics and editing.

How many years have you been in business?
We have been in business for 30 years and have produced dozens of programs with various budgets.  Some of our clients include; The AACCNJ, The Department of Defense, The Ronald McDonald House, SANS Security and Comcast Cable.  Our company slogan “If you have an idea, or need one, call us!”, exemplifies our confidence and expertise in developing  creative concepts for our video productions.  We provide great ideas for our clients’ projects, but we can also help develop ideas that clients bring to us. Video is a powerful medium and the impact of some of our programs has been greater than we ever imagined.

Sample Projects:

“Leaders Making a Difference” PSA aired on CBS during the Army -Navy  game half-time
http://danielproductions.tv/portfolio/wp-leaders-making-a-difference/

“Spirit of Discovery” Science program for kids played at the National Science Center Theatre

“200 Years of Timeless Leadership” Documentary for West Points Bi-centennial (narrated by Walter Cronkite)
http://danielproductions.tv/portfolio/west-point-bicentennial-documentary/

“Pathway to Success” (Trailer) Business program for the AACCNJ
http://danielproductions.tv/portfolio/pathway-to-success-trailer/

How did you become involved in video business? My father was always filming the family back in the day with the bright strip lights and his 8mm camera. I think that is where my interest in film got started.  I earned my degree in Visual communications from Kean University.

What motivates you? I love what I do. Video production challenges me creatively and technically, and that is motivating.  Creating something from nothing is an extremely rewarding experience. I take pride in my work and even though the project is for the client, I have a personal stake in it and strive to make it the best it can be. It is very satisfying to know that something I worked on is making an impact on someone.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know? I don’t think people realize how much thought, work and effort goes into creating a good program.  It is all about communicating and telling a story, and video production has many ways to communicate.  Everything you see and hear on TV is done for a reason; the sound, the lack of sound, colors, the angles, the lighting and the words are all part of the communicator’s arsenal.  One of my favorite college books was “The Art of Persuasion” because it shows there is a science behind communicating.

When did you join the AACCNJ? I joined the Chamber in January 2017.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? The Chamber is a resource.  It provides a way to get information and develop possible leads.  The meetings not only provide valuable information, but they also offer a good opportunity to network.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership? John Harmon has been instrumental in providing me with two major opportunities to work for the Chamber. The first opportunity was to produce the AACCNJ Marketing video.  Most of you now know that the AACCNJ has a new television show (“Pathway to Success), that is being aired on NJTV (New Jersey’s PBS station).  This is not only another accomplishment for the Chamber, it is a huge honor and success story for my company that would never have come to fruition without the help of John Harmon and the AACCNJ staff.

I remember when I joined the Chamber and had my introductory meeting with John. I pitched my idea for an AACCNJ television show.  He liked the idea and asked me to write something up and get back to him.  I developed marketing, demographic material, a demo trailer and came back with a format and outline for the program.  After some time, we met and spoke several times and when he was satisfied and felt we were ready to move forward, he said let’s make it happen.  What would be a major feat for most, with one phone call, John set-up a meeting with NJTV’s President. We left that meeting with a commitment for them to air the show!   Next, because of John and Jacqueline’s efforts in lining up sponsors and booking outstanding guests, our first show aired in April and we have five shows in the can (all shot before COVID-19).

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members? Participate in the activities they offer whenever you can. Read through the members section on the website to see what other members do.  They may have service’s you need, or they may need what you have to offer. Take advantage of the resources that the Chamber has.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? My wife and I spend a lot of time at the beach walking  Ace, our Boston Terrier. I go to many Jazz events around the state. I’m a second-degree Black Belt so I spend a good amount of time in the Dojo.

Who is your favorite sports team? I do not have a favorite team. I just like to watch an exciting and competitive game (football & basketball).

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members? Attend as many events as you can.  Network, Network, Network.  Take advantage of opportunities, such as this platform, that will allow others to learn about your company. Leverage your relationships.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? Snuggled on my couch reading a good book, or in my kitchen whipping up a new recipe.

Who is your favorite sports team? I grew up as a 76ers fan.  Today, as a mother of 4 athletes, whichever team the kids play on is my favorite team.  LOL

Business Summary:  Gedeon Engineering, PC, d/b/a Gedeon GRC Consulting offers over twenty (20) years of experience as a full service, professional MBE/DBE certified engineering and construction management firm servicing the NY metro and surrounding NY and NJ areas. Located in Princeton, NJ, with two other offices in Syosset, NY (Headquarters) and Troy, NY, our staff of 70 includes professionals with expertise in structural, civil, and traffic engineering, as well as construction/program management and construction inspection.

How many years have you been in business? I have over 35 years’ experience as a structural engineer. I have designed numerous structures utilizing all different building materials: steel, concrete, masonry, light gage, and timber. My projects include a range from commemorative memorials like the African Burial Ground Memorial in New York and the Permanent Memorial to the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations, residential/office renovations, museums, schools, and airport terminal construction. I have been involved in all facets of the design and construction process from concept and schematic design through construction administration.

How did you become involved in the engineering industry? My interest in buildings and the built environment started by appreciating the architecture of some of the buildings in my high school in Sierra Leone. Through my love of the sciences, I was further intrigued by structural engineering. After graduating from Leeds University in the United Kingdom, I started my engineering career at the international firm of Arup and was further inspired by its founder, Sir Ove Arup. I continued to pursue my engineering career when I moved to the United States in the early 1990’s and have remained an active professional in the engineering industry, now as the Director of Building at Gedeon GRC Consulting.

What motivates you? My biggest motivation comes from the sense of accomplishment when a project is completed, and it is being utilized for its intended purpose. This is especially true for the educational establishments and memorials that I have been involved in. I am also motivated by the possibility and opportunity to contribute on projects that have great socio-economic and community focus.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know? An interesting fact about the
structural sngineering industry is that a structural engineer’s involvement in a project is rarely realized by the general public and usually only credited to someone else, typically the architect. Without our particular skill set, a great many clients’ dreams could not be achieved.

When did you join the AACCNJ? Gedeon GRC Consulting joined AACCNJ in 2017.

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? The chamber has definitely facilitated the possibility of partnering with other professionals in our industry and has made it possible to offer our services and expertise to some of the larger businesses, county, and local agencies in the State.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership? I believe the most valuable aspect of AACCNJ membership has been the chamber’s continued push to provide access to smaller businesses like ours to interact and seek opportunities with the myriad of entities in the State of NJ. It has also been valuable in expanding networking opportunities within and among its membership and beyond.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members? My advice to other members of AACCNJ is to fully participate in the activities and opportunities that the chamber offers and be ready to seize upon the opportunities that will present themselves through the chamber. The chamber can be the catalyst, but you must ensure you follow through to succeed.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? When I am not working, I do enjoy spending time in my home with my wife, but also attending social activities within my community.

Who is your favorite sports team? Having lived in England before coming to the United States, I am more of a soccer fan and the team I support is Tottenham Hotspurs. However, for American football, I am a “lukewarm” supporter of the New York Giants, but my favorite sports past time is Track and Field.

About Us:
CASA of New Jersey, Inc. is part of a national network of non-profit programs that advocate for children removed from their families because of abuse or neglect at home. CASA of New Jersey promotes and supports a statewide network of CASA programs (Affiliates). CASA Affiliates recruit and train community volunteers to be a "voice in court" for children removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect. These advocates "speak up" for these children, helping them get the services they need and ensuring that they find safe, permanent homes. CASA programs operate in all 21 counties in New Jersey.

The vision of CASA of NJ is that all children of New Jersey who have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect are served by a qualified, well-trained Court Appointed Special Advocate.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Jersey provides a voice for abused and neglected children by supporting a statewide network of county-based CASA programs. Working through community volunteers, these programs advocate on behalf of children in foster care and other out-of-home placements to ensure their well-being and ultimate placement in safe and nurturing permanent homes.

CASA programs across the state also help the Department of Children and Families (DCF) ensure the safety, well-being, and permanency of these children.

How many years have you been in business? CASA of New Jersey has been in operation since 2000. By 2011, CASA programs existed in all NJ counties.

How did you become involved with this non-profit? I was a CASA volunteer advocate in the Morris/Sussex office for three years and was impressed by both their mission and their commitment to supporting the best life for children in foster care. A position opened up with CASA of New Jersey in New Brunswick for a Statewide Volunteer Coordinator and I jumped at the opportunity to be considered!

What motivates you? I’m motivated by helping people achieve their life’s purpose and supporting their dreams and aspirations – particularly children.

What’s an interesting fact about your non-profit most people don’t know?  CASA is the only entity authorized by State Statute to utilize trained volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children in placement. CASA programs received one-fifth of our funding from the State Budget, yet our services save the State more than $7 million a year.

When did you join the AACCNJ? July 7, 2017

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  John Harmon and his team have been very instrumental in supporting CASA’s Mission as a non-profit member of the Chamber. CASA of NJ is a proud member and supporter of the AACCNJ and its support of African-American business here in the state and we appreciate the opportunity to network with the membership. There are currently 9500 children in foster care in NJ. 14% of the children in the state are African American but comprise 40% of the children in foster care. The AACCNJ has supported CASA of NJ in communicating these statistics and situation to the members of the Chamber and enlist them in either becoming volunteer advocates or champions of our Mission to provide support of these children statewide.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  My ability to network with statewide members and obtain exposure to local and national business initiatives has been a key benefit of my membership with the chamber.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  Recognize and utilize the valuable resources provided by the Chamber! Their Value Proposition is outstanding – check it out!

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey? I am an avid reader and a member of the NJ 2Chapter of the Go On Girl Book Club. The Go On Girl! Book Club is a nationally recognized reading club with 300+ members committed to fostering an awareness of and appreciation for the diverse literary works by authors of the Black Diaspora.
I’m also a Board Member of Soroptimist International Club of the Oranges (NJ) – a chapter of a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment in local communities and throughout the world.

Who is your favorite sports team? The Giants! (see below)

Investors Bank and New York Giants team up with CASA of New Jersey                                (Press Release – August 1, 2019)
At a Signing Day Event on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, Investors Bank and the New York Giants announced a joint corporate social responsibility program to benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Jersey.

Each time the NY Giants score either a touchdown, field goal or safety during 2019 season, the Investors Bank Foundation will donate $250 to CASA of New Jersey, which provides advocacy for children placed in foster care due to abuse and neglect at home.  Investors Bank CEO Kevin Cummings stated “We are proud to be able to support all of the good work that CASA does throughout New Jersey.  Commitment to the community is one of our core principles at Investors Bank.”

CASA of New Jersey is grateful and proud to have been chosen by Investors Bank and New York Giants. "Our hope is that this partnership will raise awareness of the need for individuals from across the state to step up and volunteer as Court Appointed Special Advocates." said Liza M. When did you join the AACCNJ?  2018

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you?  John Harmon and his team have been very instrumental in making key introductions and helping me network on a different level.  The chamber’s reach and access is very significant.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership?  My ability to network with statewide and even national organizations is significantly enhanced by the membership with the chamber.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members?  Show up.  Ask questions.  Introduce yourself to as many folks as you can but above all, utilize the resources available to you as a member.  Engage the staff and Mr. Harmon.  They can assist in maximizing your membership.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey?  I should probably fine more time to enjoy all the Garden State has to offer.  When I do find the time, I enjoy visiting different parts of the state, from the urban bustle of Newark, Paterson or Jersey City to the sights and sounds of our beloved Jersey Shore.  Portuguese in Paterson for dinner one night, Italian in Asbury Park the next.  Good for the taste buds, questionable for the waistline!

Who is your favorite sports team? FLY EAGLES FLY!

When did you join the AACCNJ?  January 2018

As someone doing business in New Jersey, how does the chamber help you? So every contact I have today in my business is because of AACCNJ. It all started for me when I went to a meeting in Jersey City and the director at the time told me to reach out to Mr. Harmon. At that point I was looking for an organization to open doors for me. Ever since that time I have used the connection directly or indirectly to meet business owners or exes from all types of organizations. AACCNJ cannot seal the deal for anyone, but they will open the doors and provide the vehicles.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your AACCNJ Membership? AACCNJ was the first business organization I became a member of. It has afforded me to use it as a stepping stone to connect to other organizations and partners I do business with.

What advice would you give to other AACCNJ Members? Find events that will help you find others you can network with. It is difficult to build trust when you are new. So connecting with an established business partner maybe your best option.

When you are not working, where do you enjoy spending your time in New Jersey?  I spend a lot of time giving back to my community as a soccer coach.

Who is your favorite sports team?  I love all Philadelphia teams, but my favorite team is the Eagles.
